3. From Montana to Snowdonia
Celticos in conjunction with researcher Keith Morris of Segontium Searchers helped ten members of a farming family from Montana USA to trace their Welsh ancestors.
Celticos then arranged a tour of the farms where the ancestors worked the land all those years ago, they also met the people who farm these lands today.
The Montana family are the descendants of Philip Lewis who emigrated in 1882 with his brother Richard Lewis. One of the family homes was Mynydd Ednyfed Fawr farm in Criccieth and the present owners gave the visitors a real Welsh ‘Croeso’ / Welcome. This beautiful old house later became the home of Margaret Owen, who was the first wife of the famous UK Prime Minister, David Lloyd George.
As well as visiting farms and country houses, the group visited many ancient graveyards, where their ancestors lie buried in the old country and Keith was on hand to explain all the complex family links.
The group also visited Welsh Hill farmer, Gareth Wyn Jones watching him in action on the slopes of the Carneddau mountains. Of course, the main topic of conversation was the sheepdogs!
Finally, after some secret behind-the-scenes arrangements, the group were taken to a farm located well off the beaten track, to be met by a group of their long lost relatives. Everybody had a great evening happily swapping stories about…well, what do you expect? Farming of course!
Following the day spent researching their ancestry, the family spent a further four days touring North Wales with Celticos and making many new friends on the way.

'My sister-in-law Linda was the one that did the research on our history and then Kyla also, I did a family book on all of us, but never anything far back. Visiting the sites where are ancestral did things was very interesting to me, to dig stuff up from that far back, Wales is a very interesting country with all the old buildings they have kept up so nicely, I’m very happy I made this trip with my brothers and all, Kyla and Mark did a very good job setting the trip up, but being surprised with meeting some of our relatives was very special. Yes visiting the physical sites where are ancestors lived really enriched my knowledge of my genealogy, thank you for doing a good job on this Keith.

4. Australian couple trace their Welsh roots
This is a story about a couple, Wendy and Warren, who came all the way from Australia to trace their Welsh roots. Both had Welsh heritage with Warren’s side of the family originating in Gelligaer, in the heart of the coal mining valleys of south Wales and Wendy’s from the north-west region of the country.
"Research into my Griffiths family history began in the early 1980s… prompted by my Dad who told me his grandfather John Griffiths was a butcher who came from Bangor, North Wales and his grandmother Mary Williams came from Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey. Sadly, he knew little else about them and regretted not asking more questions when his father and grandmother were alive. In those early (pre-computer years) we spent many hours of searching microfiche indexes and scrolling through countless numbers of microfilm rolls. Gradually (actually over many years) we began to piece together snippets of information to build our family tree.
Having continued my family history research and with the recent assistance of Keith, I have gathered an extensive collection of ‘facts’ including family names, BMD dates and places, etc.
When planning a recent visit from Australia to the UK, Wales was on top of the list of places to visit and explore streets/cemeteries/churches related to my family history.
But with limited time in Wales, we opted for a one-day Celticos family history tour with our Celticos guide and Keith who did all the planning and organising.
We were picked up by our Celticos guide who told us he was ’sworn to secrecy’ about the itinerary and with Keith, as our guide the day unfolded as a magical mystery tour.
We visited so many places in Caernarfon, Bangor, and Anglesey - churches, cemeteries, streets and houses we would never have found by ourselves. But it was thanks to Alwyn and Keith’s extensive research and local knowledge that it became possible to connect the lives of ancestors with each location.
